Trail Mix: A blend of new MTB voices to follow on Substack
Welcome to Berm Peak (Seth Alvo), Bike 198 (Robb Sutton), Porter MTB (Eric Porter), and Super Rider (Aaron Lutze)
One factor that contributed to my decision to publish MTB Practice Lab on Substack back in 2022 was that the platform added features to encourage authors to “help each other, collaborate, and learn together… [providing] access to a community of peers.”
I got a taste of this collaboration last year when I was invited to appear on The Art of Mountain Biking podcast by co-hosts Danielle LeCourt and Jamie Bangerter. See their Episode 11. How to Practice w/ Griff Wigley. I later wrote about the episode here.
So far in 2024, four other authors who devote some of their attention to MTB skills have started publishing here on Substack. In alphabetical order:
Berm Peak by Seth Alvo. I first discovered Seth’s popular YouTube channel, Seth’s Bike Hacks, in 2016 when he published a hilariously irreverent video titled How to Ride with No Hands. The video shows him riding no-handed (no helmet) eating lunch, working on his laptop, digging in his backpack, going down stairs, and dropping an F-bomb in the narration. What’s not to like?
From the Berm Peak Substack About page:
With The Berm Peak Substack, we want to inform, educate, entertain, and help people relate to the sport of mountain biking and the entire cycling industry, the individuals and communities involved in it, and the culture it creates.
(FYI, I’ve published a new post inspired by Seth’s first Substack post, The Curse of Knowledge.)
BIKE198 by robb sutton. I first discovered Robb’s Bike198 website in 2013, about a year after I began mountain biking. I kept hearing fellow riders talking about ‘sessioning,’ and when I searched for the word and MTB, I found that Part 2 of his 6-part series on “How To Become A Better Mountain Biker” was devoted to sessioning. I wrote about it on my Mountain Bike Geezer blog here.
From the Bike198 Substack About page:
Bike198 was started back in 2008 by Robb Sutton with one purpose…provide the best reviews, tutorials and opinion articles for the mountain bike community. During that time, we have been able to reach thousands of riders around the world with our content by focuses on that core message.
PorterMTB by Eric Porter. I recently learned about Eric, his popular YouTube channel, and his PorterMTB website from a Berm Peak post he authored here.
From Eric’s Welcome post on Substack:
I’m excited to get started here. I’ll be writing articles about a wide range of topics but usually related to mountain biking, what’s worked well for us and what hasn’t worked as it relates to riding and traveling with the family, and also diving into my thoughts on bikes, setups, gear, maintenance, and my favorite places to ride and travel.
Super Rider by Aaron Lutze. I got hooked on Aaron’s Super Rider YouTube channel and Super Rider TV website in 2020 when I discovered his video Learn Five Bike Balance Basics In Your Garage. I purchased an Inspired Hex trials bike (Facebook post here) and used it to practice track stands and learn slow fakies in my garage over the winter. Aaron has recently authored a Berm Peak post here.
From the Super Rider Substack About page:
I’m the creator behind the Super Rider channel on YouTube. I break down complex bike skills into easy-to-learn drills that will make you a better rider. I love making (and watching) bike videos, so I’ve dedicated this space to share my favorite content with you.
I encourage y’all to subscribe to and support their Substacks and help spread the word to others to help grow the Substack MTB community.

Thanks so much for including me in this! How cool that you got an Inspired Hex - that's my favorite colorway (I'm still riding the red one). I'm from the Midwest originally (Wisconsin) - hopefully we'll get a chance to ride together sometime!
This is amazing, Griff! And if everyone mentioned wants to come on the show, I'd love to jam on air!
